Too Many Pinkie Pies

Dear Princess Luna...

Immediately starts off with magic. Twilight is casting a spell on an apple, it fails. Spike encourages her to try again, she says the spell is a 'toughie' but she's feeling lucky.

Unicorns, hell yeah.
Enter Pinkie Pie, who tackles Twilight and sends a bolt of magic ricocheting around, hitting a bird.

Danger close!
Twilight sent another one to hell in flames today, she wished the Kaiser could have heard him sizzle.
Twilight strains to get Pinkie off of her and pushes her away, demanding to know what the hell is wrong with Pinkie.

Pinkie explains that hugs are 'funnerific' especially with friends, and asks what Twilight was doing. So Pinkie apparently randomly ambushes ponies with ballistic hugs, and I believe she considers every pony her 'friend,' so all of Ponyville lives in terror, always looking over their shoulder because they never know when they will be violently attacked by the pink menace.

Twilight explains that the spell was to turn an apple into an orange. Take that, feeble-minded Earth ponies! All you have known, all you have loved, all that produce you lovingly tend to, can be forever changed by your unicorn betters. In a disturbing twist, the bluejay is now an unholy abomination - an orange with wings and a tail.

Instead of recoiling in fear of the crazy powers Twilight has, or in disgust at the unholy horror Twilight has conjured, Pinkie declares it 'cute' and wishes for Twilight to turn her into an orange. While bouncing about, Pinkie smashes into Rarity and dazes her. Pinkie asks if she wants to watch Twilight turn her into an orange, and that it will be fun.

Rarity counters by asking if it will be as fun as it was to make her new outfit.

Pinkie Pie flips out and starts obsessing over the fact that others could be having 'fun' right now and she might be missing it.

Rainbow Dash has a cloud on the ground and is slapping it with her tail. This allows Pinkie to bolt next to her as she continues stalking her friends for the 'fun' she desperately craves.

Rainbow explains that the 'punk cloud' got so heavy it was making fog. so she was trying to thin it out so it floats back up. Pinkie declares, "Oooh! Fun!" and rapidly runs around the cloud, sending it spiraling into the sky while also rapidly spinning Rainbow. Pinkie accelerates across the land, leaving pink Tron trails in her wake as the dazed Rainbow utters, "Thanks, Pinkie...?"

Pinkie gets a two-for-one with her next victims as she finds Applejack pulling Apple Bloom in a cart. Bizarrely, she just jumps up onto the cart for a few seconds, yelling 'Weeee!!' then saying 'Next time I'll pull you!' as she runs off in search of more fun.

She finds Fluttershy having a picnic, and, out of breath, asks if Fluttershy is doing anything fun. Fluttershy says, "Not especially" and Pinkie collapses, saying, "Fun is hard."

Fluttershy has a 'butterfly grove' with a couch which she moved the exhausted Pinkie Pie to. Pinkie thanks her and mentions her 'Pinkie Strength,' so not only does she have Pinkie Sense, she knows about her own freakish power as well.

Pinkie says she's being driven more 'kookoo-loco' than usual because of the thought of her friends having fun without her and her not being able to be there for it all. Fluttershy says she can promise not to have any fun at all if it would help. I've said it before, but man, Fluttershy has problems.

Applejack and Rainbow arrive, both looking for Pinkie to tell her about some fun they have separately planned. Pinkie thinks this is perfect, her friends are now bringing the fun to her.
Rainbow invites her to come to the swimming hole to hang out with her and Applejack says her family is having a barn raising. Pinkie is excited. No exact times were given, but Rainbow apparently knows that 'afternoon' means whenever she was going to be at the swimming hole. Probably just doing a preemptive strike so Applejack doesn't try to make her help with it. (As we know from Lesson Zero, Rainbow likes destroying barns, not raising them)

Applejack and Rainbow tell her whichever one she chooses to go to is fine with them. Pinkie is shocked, "Choose?" This kind of gives some insight into what is it to be Pinkie, as apparently prior to this she lived so randomly the very thought of having to choose something specific to do is upsetting. However, the choices are: 1.) Go to a swimming hole and hang out with Rainbow Dash, a pony we have seen Pinkie engage in shenanigans with, i.e. Griffon the Brush Off. 2.) Go to an Apple family barn raising, where you will more than likely be expected to help since unless the extended family is helping, their family includes two able-bodied adults?, one super elderly, and one youth.

Back at Ponyville, Twilight is still trying to perform her apple-orange spell. Pinkie jumps right onto her back as she goes bolting past.

This time, the ricocheting magic hits a frog.

Twilight asks Pinkie what the hell again, Pinkie explains she's trying to cut down her time so she can run between the swimming hole and Sweet Apple Acres and see both of her friends' things, and she only needs to shave off twenty minutes. Twilight laughs and tells her that the only way to pull that off is if there was more of her to go around.

Pinkie proclaims, "That's it, Twilight! The legend of the mirror pool!" and runs off. Spike thinks this is an opportunity to get out of performing that spell, and is made sad when Twilight tells him to get back to work. I'm pretty sure Spike wasn't doing jack and it was just Twilight standing out in Ponyville someplace trying to zap an apple, aka she was doing all the 'work.'. And Spike's greatest fear was that she wouldn't need him anymore? She barely needs him now other than as something to vent her endless rage on and force into doing her household chores.

Pinkie heads off into the Everfree Forest I think, and tries to remember a rhyme her Nana Pie told her. "Where the brambles are thickest, there you will find, a pond beyond the most twisted of vines!" She panics at hearing a voice, her own, then ends up falling down a hole. She tumbles through a tunnel and lands face first into the ground before the Mirror Pool.

Pinkie recites the rest of the poem as she looks into the waters. "And into her own reflection she stared, uh, yearning for one whose reflection she shared, and solemnly sweared not to be scared, at the prospect of being doubly mared!"

A second Pinkie Pie emerges and is even more insane than the original, bouncing and bolting all over the cavern. Pinkie lures her simulacrum over with talk of 'fun.' Pinkie tells her she will explain on the way to Ponyville. Cut to her talking about Rarity, who has 'all the fancy clothes and ribbons and stuff' and Pinkie suggests having Rarity make them Team Pinkie t-shirts. The simulacrum asks where the fun is and Pinkie starts to explain about the barn raising, and the other Pinkie bolts off, in the wrong direction. Pinkie sends her on the right path and tells her to make sure to inform her of everything that happens, since they are the same and it will be like she was there herself. One problem there, Pinkie, your simulacrum is you at your worst behavior. The two Pinkies race off towards 'fun.'

We see Rainbow Dash at the swimming hole.

Okay, awesome, we see Rainbow Dash reading a Daring Do book. Not so awesome, it's the same one from Read it and Weep. =[ They even seemed to have at least one other book cover done. Oh well, I'm glad it's in there regardless. Oh, they had a different book in A Friend in Deed as well.

Pinkie jumps into the air, blows up an inflatable duck tube thingy, and jumps into the water.

Rainbow looks really surprised for some reason.

Pinkie invites her into the water, Rainbow says she is feeling tired because cloud busting was tougher work than usual.

Pinkie says that's fine if Rainbow just wants to relax, at least they get to spend time together.

Rainbow says she thought Pinkie might've gone to Applejack's instead. Pinkie says she did, but doesn't know if the barn is up yet. This confuses Rainbow.

She then says she is probably still on her way there and jumps off the swing into the water, further confusing Rainbow.

Fluttershy intercepts the Pinkie simulacrum to tell Pinkie that she couldn't help herself despite her promise not to have any fun, she set up a picnic for her critters. The simulacrum begins to panic like the original Pinkie over having to choose between the picnic or 'Applejohn's'.

The Pinkie freaks out and rapidly circles them before darting off. Fluttershy asks her critter friends if it was something she said, the Pinkie returns to screech 'Yes!' before departing again. As if Fluttershy doesn't have enough negative things in her head, now she will be mulling over the meaning of this.

Back at the swimming hole, Pinkie has just finished explaining how she is able to have fun in two places at once.

Rainbow doesn't buy it that there are 'duplicates' of Pinkie and decides to fake going to sleep in hopes Pinkie will leave.

Pinkie says she will have her fun quietly and jumps off the swing again, whispering, "Wheee!!" and slowing her descent to slip silently into the water. Rainbow is confused, again.

The other Pinkie arrives and signals the original Pinkie and they both excuse themselves. Rainbow seems terrified, but just shrugs it off, although she is still startled as she rolls over and warily turns her back to the abominations.

Pinkie tries to debrief her clone, who reveals that she was trying to go see Applesauce when Fluttershutter invited her to a picnic with cute little animals. She starts crying because she didn't get to do anything fun at all.

Pinkie comforts her self and says they just need a couple more Pinkie Pies.

They end up at the mirror pool, and now there are four Pinkies. Well, Pinkie, you have 5 close friends, so you should have known you'd need at least one more.

The new Pinkies go berserk in the cave trying to find fun. Pinkie goes to lead them out and looks back in horror as the three new Pinkies invoke the mirror pool to summon more.

The new Pinkies summon even more Pinkies, Pinkie yells at them to knock it off and gets them to follow her by telling them it's fun in Ponyville. Now, does Pinkie even really know anything about this Mirror Pool, like, most importantly, the duration of the mirror images? I would imagine not.

Pinkie leads her legion of unholy terror out of the forest and towards Ponyville. She tells them that they should be able to have 'every nook and cranny of fun in Ponyville covered at all times. An unprecedented and massive undertaking!' She then quizzes them on the names she taught them: Applejack, Fluttershy, and Pinkie Pie. With that, she dismisses them and they all bolt off.

Back at the swimming hole, two Pinkies converge on Rainbow and begin messing with her, tickling her nose with one of their tails.

Rainbow sneezes and stares in amazement as a whole herd of Pinkies is going berserk at the swimming hole. Aww, the real Pinkie arrives with an inflatable raft so she can push Rainbow around, letting her have fun while she relaxes. Pinkie may not be the most intelligent, but she's really sweet sometimes. Rainbow has flipped over her chair to set up a makeshift barricade and is using the umbrella to try and fight off the Pinkie Pies. She declares, "No more Pinkies! I can't take this!" and cowers underneath the umbrella. Alright, that's certainly justifiable, Pinkie Pie is one of the most annoying things in ponydom, and her duplicates are even worse. =]

Pinkie decides it's probably best to get out of there. We finally get to see the barn raising. Not that I don't appreciate the swimming hole-Rainbow Dash action, as evidenced by the previous screenshots. =]

Looks like I may have been right and if Pinkie had gone to this, she would have had to help. They did at least get two other relatives to assist them, not sure if we've seen the male before but that green haired mare has been seen fairly often.

The herd of Pinkies invades as they are raising a wall and incapacitate Big Mac by jumping on his back. This starts a chain reaction and the Apples lose all the work they had done as the entire thing collapses. Applejack is pissed and questions the real Pinkie about where all the Pinkies came from so she can find out who's responsible for them ruining the barn raising.

Pinkie says she is really busy and they should probably talk later and runs off. I'm not sure what's up with this, but we see a blonde-haired mare, which didn't appear to be there before. Supposed to be the green one but the wrong model was used?

Applejack is furious and throws her hat on the ground, yelling for all the Pinkies to get back there and clean up their mess.

Pinkie hides behind a hay stack and realizes that maybe unleashing a plague of hers on her friends wasn't such a good idea.

An angry mob has formed outside of the library. I guess they figure if some supernatural BS is going on, Twilight Sparkle is the one that did it.

Even Fluttershy looks pissed. Twilight asks them all to calm down. Rarity is enraged, saying a hurricane of Pinkies just raged through her shop.

Fluttershy is super pissed that they ruined her critter picnic. So the only one who might have been spared their wrath was Twilight, which may have had the negative effect of helping them all blame her for the plague of Pinkies.

Twilight and Spike head inside the library to try and find the legend Pinkie had mentioned to them earlier. In a very strange twist, the book the legend is in just happens to be in a secret compartment that Spike finds. It will be interesting if this is explained at all. I mean, what the hell?

Spike struggles to pull the book out and is launched across the room as it comes loose. Twilight picks it up off him and begins flipping through it, and of course it is the proper book. It contains a spell that will let her send all the mirror images back, but it can send back the real one as well. +1 Unicorns/Magic, if there wasn't a unicorn around, a unicorn capable of using the spell, Ponyville would be a wasteland within days as the rampaging Pinkies destroyed it all in the pursuit of fun.

Spike says it will be simples. Twilight goes back out to the mob and asks if any of them knows how to tell the real Pinkie apart. The real Pinkie is in the crowd and tries to talk to Twilight since she needs help, Twilight dismisses her, saying she isn't talking to any of the Pinkies except the real one. They all start saying they are the real one.

For some reason Fancypants is in Ponyville.

Applejack and Twilight are upset because they can't figure out which would be the real one. Even the actual Pinkie starts crying because she doesn't know which is real.

The herd of Pinkies rampages down the streets as Twilight walks with Spike. They see Pinkie looking really depressed and slumped over a table. Twilight says it can't be the real Pinkie because she's never sat that long in one place in her entire life... Despite Twilight only knowing Pinkie for a few months, and her pre-Ponyville life apparently being a dreary rock farm with no smiling or talking. Yep, sounds like Twilight Worth. Spike asks her anyways and Pinkie replies that she doesn't even know, and if she said she was, they wouldn't believe her anyway.

Spike says he misses the real Pinkie. In tears, Pinkie says she bets she misses him too and that she would do just about anything to get to be with her friends again. Man, that's pretty sad. She pokes at the ground with her hoof as Twilight and Spike walk away, and she gets the idea of a test. Something that would be really hard for Pinkies to do, so only the Pinkie that wants to stay the most will pass. Twilight thinks it's a great idea and runs off to set it up.

Pinkie starts having doubts, wondering if she is the real one, if she will pass the test. She rages at the magic mirror water, saying it's its fault, then admits it's hers too.

Twilight is walking through the woods when Rainbow calls for her from a hole in a tree. Inside are also Rarity, Fluttershy, and the critters. Rainbow explains that Fluttershy spoke to the woodland critters and they agreed to take the ponies into their home until the Pinkie storm dies down. In another Pinkie Pie focused episode, Party of One I believe, Rainbow and Fluttershy use an excuse that they were house sitting for a bear. The tree-home they are in here may very well be a callback to that episode, as it is furnished with lanterns, a stove, pictures, etc. Twilight tells them they are going to fix everything, and reassures Fluttershy that they won't be losing the real one. Twilight says she got the Apple family to round up the Pinkies.

Applejack, Big Mac, Apple Bloom, and Applejack's dog, Winona, herd the "Fun!" yelling Pinkies into the Ponyville Town Hall. Applejack must still be pissed as hell as she mutters, "Oh, give it a rest" as her brother and sister close the doors behind them.

The Pinkies are jumping around berserk inside the town hall and Twilight asks them to sit. She is shocked that they ignore her. Sacrilege! How dare some pony ignore Twilight Worth? She repeats her request, elaborating that they need to sit even though they can't be comfortable sitting in one place. They ignore her again.

Twilight has had enough and rages, screaming, "Sit DOWN!" The Pinkies obediently sit, looks of shock on their faces.

Twilight begins to explain why she has gathered them there when Rainbow comes in with the real Pinkie, saying she found her poking at the ground and drawing frowny faces. Twilight tells her to have her sit with the others and Rainbow just drops her. Okay, it's kind of understandable, but you have an army of Pinkies going berserk, and one Pinkie acting super depressed...

The Pinkies moan and groan as Twilight explains they are there to take a test and that whoever passes gets to stay. The test is revealed to be: watching paint dry.

The Pinkie's recoil in horror.

The test begins and the Pinkies are actually staring at the wall of wet paint. Spike brought a carton of popcorn and says, "This is so exciting!" but changes his tune to "Okay, maybe not that exciting..." as he finishes the popcorn. Possibly another callback to that Party of One episode, Rainbow Dash has an actual watch.

Some of the Pinkies start to crack. One looks out the window at a bird and Twilight immediately blasts her. As the spell courses through her body, the Pinkie inflates, implodes, explodes, then returns to the Mirror Pool as a coil of pink energy. I like how Twilight showed almost no hesitation either. She could have easily been vaping one of her best friends.

The Pinkies continue staring at the paint. One Pinkie asks another to watch her bounce and hit the ceiling, both get shot. One sees that orange-frog out the window and brings attention to it, resulting in two other Pinkies getting whacked.

A Pinkie says, "Look what I can do with my hooves!" and sprouts fingers. Twilight mercifully vanquishes her and the unfortunate witness to this atrocity, and just to make sure that we, the viewers, can sleep well at night, they also show both of them inflating/imploding/exploding and turning into energy coils.

Another Pinkie says, "Bet you can't make a face crazier than this!" and transforms hers into a retro My Little Pony. Twilight blasts her and the witness.

Twilight looks really pissed as she blasts these Pinkies. Rarity and Fluttershy look a bit concerned that Twilight is enjoying it so much. Twilight's horn is glowing red as she eliminates it down to just two Pinkies.

Rainbow Dash decides to cheat and kill off one of the Pinkies by mentioning some pony making balloon animals. The last simulacrum is vanquished, and they gather around the real Pinkie. Or they better hope it's the real one. Pinkie says she had to keep staring at the paint because she couldn't leave her friends, she just couldn't. She continues to say that she realizes now that sometimes she will need to choose between them. Back at Ponyville, Pinkie is in her bedroom dictating a letter to Princess Celestia for Spike.
"Dear Princess Celestia, it's great to have fun, but it's even greater to have great friends. And having lots of friends means that you sometimes have to make choices as to who you spend your time with. But that's okay, because good friends will always give you lots of opportunities to have fun. So even if you're missing out, it's never for long. Respectfully yours, Pinkie Pie."
As she is dictating, we see her helping to raise the barn.

Hanging out with Rainbow Dash at the swimming hole again.

Getting Twilight to seal up the hole she fell down to the pool. I guess Big Mac helped haul that boulder there. Perhaps the Apples are super pissed at the whole thing and don't want it happening again so he volunteered.

All of her friends arrive outside Sugar Cube Corner and ask her what she wants to do. Applejack offers wheelbarrow races, Rainbow suggests she take everyone on a cloud ride, Rarity is enthusiastic about throwing a party with punch and zesty cucumber sandwiches. Pinkie asks, "Wanna know exactly what I wanna do right now?" She backs up into the store and lies down, falling asleep. Fluttershy says, "That looks like fun." They all laugh and Twilight gently shuts the door with her magic.

What I learned from this episode:
  • Saw a few new uses for magic here. Some insanely powerful 'thing to orange' spell that can work on living creatures as well as a spell to vanquish beings to the Mirror Pool. The Mirror Pool itself is of course some kind of magic. Interesting thing is, could that spell be used to just straight up vanquish ponies to the pond? It says it has no IFF component, ala the real one can be vaped just as easily as a fake. What happens to the victims of it?
  • That hidden bookshelf. Nothing about it? Really? Spike finds this thing (Rewind, yep he was surprised to see it) and it just so happens to have some spell book, and not even Twilight really comments about it?
  •  Pinkie Pie had some heart-string-tugging moments in this episode. Getting that raft so she could play with Rainbow while letting her relax, crying because she thought it would be impossible to tell which was the real her, saying how she just had to stare at the paint because she just couldn't leave her friends...
