Alright, this is the follow-up to Just For Sidekicks, so we will be seeing Twilight and co. helping Mi Amore Cadenza in the Crystal Empire.
We begin with Spike shooing Twilight out the door as seen in Just For Sidekicks.
I actually watched this on Saturday, but wasn't able to write up my post to go along with it. I did jot down some notes though, so I can do the summation segment at least.
What I learned from this episode:
- Rarity got screwed! There should only be one episode left this season, and I'm fairly sure it won't be about Rarity. I had even seen a pre-S3 tweet from Meghan McCarthy saying 'Hey Rarity fans, I've got an episode for you.' or something to that effect. I suppose she did have some moments in Sleepless in Ponyville, and this one, but still. This episode had a cool premise they could have used too. Well, several of them actually. We saw Donut Joe in the connected episode, JFS, and Rarity had that dangerous mission outfit she had been thinking of in Magic Duel. Donut Joe aka Con Mane and Rarity could have done something together to warrant her outfit. The episode could have focused on Rarity and Cadence interacting. The Inspector could have been Luna instead of a new character, and then it could have been Rarity and Luna interacting, especially since Rarity's part with her in Luna Eclipsed didn't make it in. Oh well, it had some more Cadenza, some Rainbow Dash, a little Rarity and Twilight, so I enjoyed it.
- Not only did Rarity not get an episode for herself, even this one where she had an important role they screwed her by having her skip a step, because she thought it was 'optional' and of course Rarity would skip steps of a complex hair style while working on her 'opportunity of a lifetime.'
- New location/race: Mustangia and mustangs. Mustangs are known as wild horses, so that was a neat little touch they did with having Cooped Up/the mustang freaking out about being inside and wanting to get outside and run around.
- Disconcerting news: Twilight's RAGE may be going away. :( She was doing exercises Cadence taught her I guess to calm down in this episode. I hope they won't get rid of her anger issues, I love her anger issues.
- Kind of par for the course for Season 3, but Rainbow Dash was once again the star here. We saw her as a filly getting her hopes crushed (and her dad/relative!), and she was going all out to make sure that didn't happen to the Crystal Ponies (Nurts to any other city trying to get the games I guess), even making sure they didn't question the mustang 'inspector's' behavior by Dale Gribbleing it into 'tests' and then once they realized they had fouled up, she offered herself up to take responsibility.
- I still have no idea why this was tied into JFS other than just to do it. Seemingly there was no reason why Spike wasn't invited (also I highly doubt he would have had 'fun' since they were just walking around).
- The ending was kind of put together shoddily I think. So Harshwhinny, 'Cooped Up,' Rarity/Cadence, and Twilight and the rest all end up in the Spa. Alright. Cooped Up tells Harshwhinny about the amazing welcome she got, and that she plans to extend her visit. Cadence is finally done and comes out, gets confronted by Harshwhinny and is shocked Harshwhinny didn't have a welcome, then Rainbow confesses and says, right in front of Harshwhinny, that the super awesome welcome went to Cooped Up and not her. Harshwhinny then gives the Games to the CE, despite the fact that the "warmest, finest, most fabulous reception she ever had." would have been the "big phony-baloney song and dance" she was griping about had Twilight and co. not fouled up.
- I did like Harshwhinny though, she looked and sounded like I was imagining she would. Too bad we didn't get to see too much of her.
