Fall Weather Friends

Dear Princess Luna..

Episode begins with Rainbow Dash and Applejack playing horseshoes.
Rainbow Dash says, "I'll get more ringers than you!" and Applejack says, "Nuh uh!" and the object of the game is to find parking.

Rainbow is talking trash, calling her Applesmack and Applejack scores a ringer and wins. Rainbow is upset because she hates losing.
"I lost?! Only losers like Twilight lose!"
Applejack thinks she's a 'mighty good athlete,' but claims herself is the best in Equestria. Rainbow thinks herself is the best, and challenges Applejack to an Iron Pony competition: a series of athletic contests to see who is the best. Applejack accepts the challenge! They 'seal the deal' by spitting on the hooves and slapping them together.

Twilight is brought in to be the judge, and the rest of their friends show up to watch them compete. The first challenge is an obstacle course of barrrels they need to weave through. Applejack goes through in record time, but hit into a barrel, getting a 5 second penalty. Rainbow is looking really nervous, but blazes through the course, clocking in at 18 seconds.
I'm surprised she didn't just fly over it all.
The next event is one of those carnival games where you hit the thing with a mallet and try to ring a bell, except in The Ponyverse they kick a target with their hind legs. Rainbow goes first, hitting the bell and gets all excited. She smirks at Applejack, who is resting under a tree.
"Lemme show ya how a pro-fessional does it."
Applejack casually saunters over, and literally destroys the thing because she kicked it so hard. Rainbow is awe-struck, and to add injury to insult, Applejack kicks the tree and sends apples plummeting onto Rainbow's head.
"Years of applebuckin'" and freakish hind leg strength.
Up next is the 'bronco buck' where they have to buck off Spike, who 'volunteered.' Applejack loses because Spike grabbed onto her tail and cost her some time, Rainbow didn't give him a chance and wins it. Twilight also seemed particularly enthusiastic about seeing Spike get hurt.
"Yes! That was amazing Rainbow! You even managed to hurt Spike after the fact!"
Spike is 'volunteered' again for the lasso contest. Applejack dominates it, of course, and Rainbow nearly hung herself.
"How did this even happen?!"
Rainbow wins some kind of ball-headbutting contest, we also see more non-mane 6 audience members are here, as pegasi have gathered to support Rainbow. Next is a hay bale throwing contest. Rainbow throws first, then tries to be cool by flying over to where it landed and giving Applejack a Bronx cheer. Appljack's bale smashes her, winning that contest.
"It was worth it..."
Applejack loses in arm-wrestling (leg-wrestling?), somehow, then wins football kicking. The two are tied 5-5. Spike is enjoying his announcer schtick, and Twilight gets angry at him, asking who he's talking to, we then see there is a huge crowd. Nice situational awareness, Twilight.
Maybe Twilight needs glasses, but thinks she's already 'dorky' enough and doesn't want her geekiness to be identifiable on sight.
I could have sworn Earth ponies were supposed to have super strength and endurance, I could be wrong, but I was pretty sure it was true. Applejack loses another contest she should have won, doing 100 push ups.
Really, Applejack, the pegasus has more endurance?
Rainbow wins long jumping, although it sure seems like cheating, as she is about to touch down then uses her wings to fly past Applejack's distance.
"Oh, come on! Asterisk! Asterisk!"
Next is some crazy contest to carry chicks to their mothers through a trench of mud. Applejack's chicks jump off, Rainbow wins by using her wings to block the mud from hitting her chicks.

So we were just 5-5, and I'm pretty sure Rainbow just won 3 events. There's only one event left, tug-o-war, so unless it randomly counts for more points, Applejack has already lost, no?
"Rainbow's already won, but I wanna see one of you end up in the mud!"
Rainbow cheats by flying into the air, then tricks Applejack into letting go of the rope, telling her she can't understand her with the rope in her mouth. Wait, what? It shows the final score as Rainbow 15, Applejack 5. Yeah I don't know, but it's safe to say Applejack just got the Ponyville Screwjob.
"No! Thumbs, thumbs, my orchard for opposable thumbs!"
Rainbow is gloating, and Applejack accuses her of cheating by using her wings. Rainbow denies it, and then says Applejack didn't tell her not to use them, Applejack retorts that she didn't think she had to.
"Them's fightin' words!"
Applejack is not pleased, and challenges Rainbow to race her in the Runnin' of the Leaves, without using her wings.
Why does everyone always attack Rainbow's tail? Rainbow pattern envy?
Rainbow agrees, and they spit and 'shake' on it again. They get all up in each others face and Rainbow giver her a Bronx cheer again.
When der AJ says, you cannot use your wings, we: Heil! *blat* Heil! Right in der AJ's face!
Spike wants to be the announcer for the Running of the Leaves, and gets upset because Pinkie Pie has that role, using a hot air balloon for 'eye-in-the-sky' coverage. Turns out its some crazy Ponyverse thing where if they don't do this race, the autumn leaves would never fall. Rainbow shows up, demanding others get out of her way because she's the 'iron pony' and Applejack gets pissed. Rainbow says she could win the race both wings tied behind her back, I think we know where that is headed, based on Applejack's look:
Yep.
I love the look on Rainbow Dash there.
Spike awkwardly goes to try and get Pinkie to surrender her announcer role, and she invites him to be her co-reporter. Applejack and Rainbow glare at each other at the starting line, and both are surprised to see Twilight preparing to race.
"Twilight, you idiot, you can't race! You're an egghead!"
Applejack and Rainbow start snickering to each other about Twilight, Rainbow calls her an egghead, Twilight says she's just well-read, and may have never run a race, but she's read a lot about running. Twilight defends herself, saying she's just doing it to learn about the Ponyville tradition, and Rainbow and Applejack continue to laugh at and mock her.
"You guys are jackasses!"
Alright, so what are guessing here? 1. Some random pony wins it. 2. Twilight wins it. 3. It's a tie between Applejack/Rainbow/and/or Twilight. I'm thinking it will be 2, and she will beat them because Applejack and Rainbow start fighting with each other while Twilight plods ahead.

The race begins, and we learn that the vibrations from the stampeding ponies causes the leaves to fall off the trees. Applejack and Rainbow end up in the lead and are fairly well matched. Applejack trips on a rock and goes down headfirst into the dirt.
The rest of the racers pass Applejack, showering her in leaves. Twilight Sparkle is bringing up the rear, enjoying all the scenery. Applejack is pissed, thinking Rainbow tripped her. Twilight tells her she should be taking it slow like her, so she would have seen the rock she tripped on. Applejack runs off to try and catch back up to Rainbow.
"I thought you were the Element of Loyalty, why are you betrayin' your friend like that?"
Rainbow looks back and sees no ponies are close, and slows her pace. Applejack comes out of nowhere and passes her. They go neck and neck again, and Rainbow trips, resulting in, again, the rest of the racers charging past, leaves falling on her, her blaming Applejack for tripping her, and the last place Twilight coming up and explaining what really happened. Twilight tells her its 'just a game' and continues on. Rainbow decides that not only is Twilight lying to her, the Honesty Element Applejack is also cheating, and seems to imply she is going to use her wings.
"I can understand Applejack lying, she probably conned her way into the Element of Honesty, but Twilight too? I'll deal with her punk ass later."
Her wings are still bound, or would appear to be, when we resume. (Also, Pinkie Pie and Spike, but especially Pinkie Pie, have been intermittently blathering on throughout this) She has caught up to Applejack, then, what a shocker, cheats by whipping a branch into Applejack, knocking her down. Applejack is pissed, and bends back a branch, launching herself forwards and passes Rainbow again.
"I challenged that unrepentant, no good, cheatin' Rainbow to an honest race, and she's cheatin'  again!?"
Applejack sees a bee's nest on a tree up ahead, kicking it and causing them to swarm after Rainbow. Rainbow's terror lets her get ahead, she hides in a bush and evades them, conveniently next to a sign marking the route. She hits it, making it point the other way.
Pinkie Pie, heard in the distance, "Hey! Bugs Bunny jokes are my schtick!"
Rainbow is still laughing as Twilight approaches, and she tells Twilight she's sure to win now. Twilight asks how, since all the other racers just passed her, and Rainbow runs off. Pinkie spies Applejack, who faithfully obeyed the sign and wound up at the top of a mountain/cliff, and gets a ride with Pinkie, dropping in in front of Rainbow.
Applejack gives us her Daring Do impression. =]
Rainbow cries foul, but Applejack says she just said no wings, not flying in general. They are running through some maple trees or something, and Applejack kicks a tree, knocking the sap collection bucket to the ground. Rainbow gets stuck in it, and ends up using it to propel herself forwards.
Rainbow goes flying by at high speed, bowling into Applejack, who starts spinning into a tornado. She hits into Rainbow and they both end up on a cliff face. They glare at each other and the rock gives way, sending them down on a rock 'sled.' The other racers pass, and Twilight says far be it from her, but shouldn't they be running, since it's the Running of the Leaves. Rainbow and Applejack look like they might have forgiven each other, but Rainbow uses the moment to pull a fast one and runs off.
"Do you think we went too far?" "Nah, we're both still alive, ain't we?"
Rainbow and Applejack are head to head again, and Rainbow the cheating douchebag rams into Applejack, they start hitting into each other. Rainbow tells Applejack to stop, they then yank each other back by their tails, and Applejack accidentally grabs the ropes binding Rainbow's wings, who declares, "All bets are off!"
"I guess I should have broke your wings when I had the chance!"
Applejack tackles Rainbow out of the air, and they cross the finish line in an Andy Capp melee dust cloud. Rainbow thinks she's won, Pinkie says they tied, for last. They are both shocked and ask who won, and their eyes pop out as they see Twilight with a medal.
May only be 5th place, but that's pretty impressive since she is Twilight, and there were like 20-30? ponies racing.
Twilight won 5th place, explaining she followed directions in her book to pace herself, then she sprinted at the end, when the other racers were worn out. Applejack and Rainbow can't believe they lost to Twilight. (So it ended up being 1 (a random pony won), sort of 2 (Twilight winning), and 3 (a tie), and my guess was mostly correct (Twilight would beat them because they fought), except Twilight didn't win the whole thing.
"Twilight is a better athlete than us? Are we..are we eggheads now?"
Applejack and Rainbow admit their behavior was terrible and they were poor sports. Princess Celestia appears, and says it sounds like they learned a lesson.
I've never commented about it before, I think, but how exactly does this always sneak up on them? She's pretty easy to see, but I reckon she might use magic.
Fall is Celestia's favorite season so she came to watch the race. Applejack apologizes to the Princess for her and Rainbow being douchebags.
"I was just watching the leaves fall, there's a race you say?"
Celestia says that's alright, it's easy to get caught up in the excitement of competition. Twilight Worth, unsatisfied with Celestia's response, and/or seeking to show off in front of her master, tells them that friendship is always more important that competition. The Princess acknowledges Twilight Worth's moral, then tells Applejack and Rainbow that a bunch of leaves still need to be knocked down. The episode ends with Applejack and Rainbow running and knocking down leaves, united as friends.

What I learned from this episode:
  • Rainbow Dash is a douchebag. Not just that she was cheating and playing dirty, but also constantly being annoying and acting like she was superior to her friend/other ponies, even though usually she was 'superior' because she cheated in the first place. I mean, we had seen she is kind of 'meh' personality wise in some other episodes, but this one really makes her look like an asshole. Did like that it showed she has strength and speed.
  • All this time I've been assuming Applejack's power was her immense strength. Turns out Rainbow Dash is her equal, or better, in some aspects, making Applejack's Earth pony heritage kind of useless since a pegasus can conceivably do anything Applejack can, but fly and manipulate clouds as well. Applejack does still have her baking abilities though, Rainbow probably can't even cook.
  • I don't know if it's just tradition, or if they really have to personally knock the leaves off the trees. They probably do, just because they have to manufacture the weather and  raise the sun and moon themselves.

  1. I have to disagree with you on Rainbow Dash in this episode.

The only time she actually cheated was in the big race at the end.

If anything, I felt Applejack was the douche this time.

"Hey, Rainbow was beating me fair and square using her primary muscles. Let's gripe about how she should be limited from using her biggest asset, while I'm naturally born superior in the rest of mine"

Let's do this whole race thing at the end, but with Applejack having her hind legs tied over her back. It's the rough equivalent.

RD did cheat more easily once she thought she had been wronged- but she is the impulsive one.

But the Sour Grapes exhibited by AJ when RD beat her fairly? Beneath her.

As for the endurance thing... why in blazes would Applejack be better at that than the long distance, competition flier?

As for RD being superior/smug... again, something AJ exhibited as well when she was ahead/won.

    1. This was obviously not the finest hour for either of them, especially since they were laughing at poor Twilight for wanting to experience the Running of the Leaves.

I gave Rainbow most of the heat because she started using her wings to give herself an edge in the Iron Pony Competition, with the long jump (she panics as she sees she's going to lose, then uses her wings) and tug-o-war (again, Applejack should have won, Rainbow panic-flapped her wings as she was about to lose, then tricks AJ for the win. Although, it shouldn't have even mattered which one won, as Rainbow was ahead at this point, but 'cheated' anyway) being pretty dirty on her part.
Asides from bucking down a thing of apples onto Rainbow, and maybe intentionally kicking a hay bale onto her (after she gave AJ a Bronx cheer), I'm not noticing AJ doing anything like that at that point, she even tells herself to 'be a good sport' when she first sees Rainbow using her wings.

Dash was also the first to start the Running of the Leaves antics when she tripped and refused to believe Twilight (and Applejack's Honest character), then knocked AJ down with a branch, giving AJ a Bronx cheer afterwards, no less. The die had been cast, and AJ, along with being a rodeo champion (so she's used to 'clean' events), is no Fluttershy, so it's not surprising that she stooped to Dash's level, and enjoyed seeing the lil' cheater get her just desserts.

Whether it was just for AJ to want to bind her wings, well, the RotL is a footrace, with the sole purpose for their hoofsteps to cause vibrations and knock the leaves down. Rainbow was also only 1 second behind her in the barrel event, and they were pretty much neck-and-neck with each other before they started cheating, so it's not like AJ's well-toned rear legs give her that much of an advantage, if any, in a race. Think of it like this, if she actually cared about winning, would it have been fair for Twilight to cast a spell, slowing the movement of the other competitors? Or teleporting ahead of them? Probably not, which is why it would be unfair for Rainbow to use her wings.

As for the Earth pony/Applejack endurance, that was under the false belief that the writers actually gave Earth's the racial traits of strength and endurance (as evident by Big Mac dragging a house through the streets and Cheerilee busting through a wall in Hearts and Hooves Day, or this very episode constantly calling Applejack the 'workhorse'), turns out - no, no they did not, as I've since learned members of every race have performed similar feats of strength. Including unicorn and pegasi colts/fillies pulling heavy carts in season 3. =]

Regarding Applejack's behavior, can you really blame her? She thought she lost the Iron Pony only because Rainbow started 'cheating,' then Rainbow actually did start 'cheating' in the RotL, in addition to dealing with Rainbow's 'the very thought of losing is hateful to me' attitude including the aforementioned Bronx cheers. (And how BS is it that Trixie got screwed over for essentially promising everypony a good show, with Rarity/Applejack/Rainbow/Spike heckling her for 'boasting' and ultimately leading to her career getting trashed, yet Rainbow's friends rarely call her out for her boasting behavior. Shenanigans, man, shenanigans. =] )

Don't get me wrong, I love Rainbow Dash and she's consistently in my favorite characters, but sometimes you gotta side with the lesser of two evils, and in this episode's case, it would be Applejack.

  2. I can blame AJ, since the whole spectacle was her fault to begin with.

Let's salt the wounds of an already, self-confessed terrible loser, and then act like a smug ass about it.

AJ wasn't the lesser of two evils. She was the instigator here, much like the crew was in the Trixie episode.

And frankly, I could say Trixie did just as bad as RD's cheating(you know, actually hurting RD physically using her magic- almost causing her to vomit). But again, she was not the instigator.

As for AJ's complaints about cheating... I'd have taken her side in this episode if she, you know, didn't sink to RD's level. You are the element of HONESTY, for chrissakes. That would've been a lesson.

A better way of handling the end of this episode would've been to keep the cheating to RD only, and then have her actually ending up in trouble.
Let's say, getting stuck under a tree while preparing some trick, or like turning her back to taunt Applejack while using her wings to rush ahead(since this time, they had an agreement not to use them) and have her hit a tree that falls over and get stuck under it, within sight of the goal? You know, as in that Pet episode. Have AJ forfeit the easy victory to help RD get free.
Do it with RD seeing the other ponies finish the race and have her ask AJ what she's doing, she's going to lose. "That's not important."

Perhaps a bit of cliche, but it does work. Heck, it would have pulled AJ from my spot as least liked Mane 6 member into the top 3, I think.

Do note that I like her, I just find her to be less entertaining than the rest of the Mane 6- mostly for her role as the sensible one of the group, I suppose.

Rarity started out as by far my least liked one- I've never had much love for fashionista characters, but her voice actress and overdramatics just makes almost every scene she's in a joy. I'd actually say she's my fave these days. They say anything Tabitha voices will turn to gold, and frankly, I believe them. Spryte(voiced by then 12 year old Tabitha), despite her rather rude and lecherous behaviour, was my favorite character of The old Legend of Zelda cartoon.

Trixie and RD are pretty much in the same situation(being the one "heckled" and then resorting to less than honest moves in return- Trixie is just much more stylish in how she does it).

I suppose Trixie has the added excuse of her work, but really, I can't see how you can hold Trixie as the lesser evil in her episode, yet RD as the bigger one in this. What I can say is that Trixie suffered far worse, and much less deserved consequences.

At least RD is self-confessed to be a bad loser- and a braggart, for that matter. She's not a hypocrite.

AJ is all three, a braggart, bad loser, and a hypocrite. The difference is the show, as a rule, takes her side.

I suppose I simply dislike hypocrites(that aren't called out on their hypocrisy often if at all- AJ, mostly fits this, as do Katara from ATLA, who I dislike as well...), which may be why Applejack kind of annoys since she's generally supposed to be the honest, sensible one.

I will say, though, that this is one of my least liked episodes(as is Boast Busters, though I will admit to adoring Trixie). Much like the Trixie episode, I disliked the "designated hero" of the episode.

Only reason I like it better is that at least it ended up with both of them getting the crap(showng they knew AJ wasn't some innocent saint), unlike how the Boast Busters episode essentially had the "heroes" be Karmic Houdinis.

Thankfully, most episodes aren't FWF, BB or Pet episode class. If they were, I'd drop the series like a hot potato.

  3. I will admit that when it comes to athletics I'm actually pretty obsessed with the rules being followed, even back in school, when I was on recess(so much that my friends actually has told me off- this is a game after all).

But the problem here isn't that. Yes, one can see RD using her wings as cheating. But at the same time, it was never described as such until afterwards(making AJ come off as a sore loser). Due to it essentially being a competition of physical capacity... I expect both ponies to be allowed to do their best- which for RD, includes her wings- the strongest part on her(No kidding, seeing as someone calculated her Rainboom speed to actually surpass Mach 7).

It simply feels like me complaining about my friend actually giving it her all instead of limiting herself. RD starting to use her wings felt less like a "Gotta cheat to win", and more like "Underestimated AJ, better actually put my full ability to use". And frankly, most of RD's victories were in full view- if they had any kind of referee or the like and this was considered cheating.

Thus once we hit the race and the cheating starts... Yes, I dislike RD for cheating.

But as something of a stickler for rules... how do I feel when the supposedly honest character that was the one to complain about cheating to begin with... starts to cheat? And even considered doing so before any known cheating on her opponents part- only assumed? When she instead of sticking to the rules like an honest sportsman should, decides to cheat herself? Yeah, not gonna like that. Especially considering how little pushing it actully took to her to start.

As for what sports I've been in, that would be hockey, soccer and rugby, btw.

  4. So what I'm trying to say...

Yes. RD is a douchebag in this. I just feel that AJ was even more of one.
Frankly, the smug behaviour in the beginning of the episode? More rage-inducing than any kind of victory/taunt I ever had to suffer in my 5+ years as a sportsman. Surprisingly few people are that kinda smug, and even the ones that are usually limit it to the match(as a tool to rile the opponent up). Post-victory bragging is actually rather rare, as usually, the winner will be celebrating instead.

This episode, for me, is the exceptional example of "Pay Evil unto Evil". From both RD and AJ.

  5. I suppose being a 'smug ass' as you put it is an Applejack character trait. Applebuck Season, she's so sure of herself that she ends up endangering herself and others. Boast Busters, not only was she starting shit she hopped right up on stage, so sure that her skills were superior, despite her opponent being able to wield magic. Mare Do Well, who can forget 'the look' she and Twilight shared as they conspired against Rainbow. The Last Round Up, pledges her winnings to the town before the rodeo even happened, then ran off rather than admit she wasn't good enough. SSCS6k, 'Haha, I didn't learn nothin'!'

And those are just the examples I can remember. She was also mocking poor Twilight in this episode, so, yeah, smug ass.

She's kind of got that 'good ol' boy' mentality going on. She looks down on others for behavior she condones, which probably doesn't help the 'smug ass' aspect, and she knows she is skilled athletically, since she has the blue ribbons from her rodeo wins tacked up for display on the farm. This combination likely led to her cheating alongside Dashie in the race, since Applejack *is* generally an honest, 'good' pony, she loses the Iron Pony to what she definitely believes was cheating, then Rainbow starts doing it again in the race. To quote Jay Wilson, "**** that loser," and being the smug ass, good ol' boy that she is, Applejack would have to have Fluttershy level 'do anything you want to me, it's okay' going on to not retaliate in turn. Hell, look how pissed off she got about the Pinkie Pies in TMPP, she's got a pretty low tolerance for BS, even from what are supposed to be her pre-destined friends.

Regarding the Element of Honesty cheating: "On Twitter, the episode's (MMMystery on the Friendship Express) writer Amy Keating Rogers revealed that she wrote a scene in which Twilight commends Applejack for her self-control, and Applejack confesses to taking a bite while Pinkie was asleep and leaving no clues. However, it was cut for time"

Now, that is pretty stupid and it's a good thing it didn't make it in, but what's worse is that it actually got green lit up to a point, you know, the writer(s) actually thought their Element of Honesty doing that wouldn't be silly. It even says she confesses only after being congratulated for not eating it (so that means glutton Pie and perfect Twilight were the only ones they thought had enough restraint to resist the cake), and that she left no clues, so either she just didn't leave any evidence, or she covered it up.

Applejack is generally below Rarity, above Pinkie/Fluttershy on my mane 6 ranking, and would probably be bumped down to 5th in favor of Pinkie for my Season 3 ranks if it hadn't been for Pinkie's nonsensical Rainbow lust in Wonderbolt Academy, but there is still a few episodes left so we shall see. She's generally reliable, hard working, acts as the 2nd in command, is a loving sister that takes care of her family and friends, and it appears they may have decided that her parents are gone (https://twitter.com/TheRealSibsy/status/282581589479792641), which you gotta respect her for soldiering on despite that devastating loss at what must have been an early age.

  6. Rarity was one of the designs that interested me before I began watching this, and she is definitely a favorite after watching it. What sucks is I'm fairly sure I remember something from the staff claiming every member of the mane 6 got a spotlight episode for Season 3, and it would appear Rarity is getting screwed over according to the episode synopses that have been revealed. They even had a perfect set up for a spy spoof by having her interact with Con Mane in MMMystery and be thinking of a 'dangerous mission outfit' in Magic Duel, but alas, nothing seems to be coming from it, yet... =]

About Trixie, the reason I didn't judge her negatively is because they just immediately started ragging on her seconds after the show began then Douchebag Dash starts booing her and gets up in her face, which come to think of it, Applejack instigated, as Rainbow started booing her after doing legit boasting and getting a look from AJ. Becase of this, I was on Trixie's side from the beginning, before I grew to really like the character as the episode progressed, so I suppose it's not too surprising that I can't fault her for doing what she did, as she was just giving hecklers their just desserts... and then got screwed over. =]

Mmm, I do really like Trixie though, especially since she got some justice in Magic Duel. It's still early, but she should definitely be making my season 3 top 5 list along with (tentatively) Rainbow Dash and Lightning Dust. Surprisingly, I'm not sure if Twilight will make it, she's been kind of 'meh' this season, being absent from a chunk of episodes. :( Oh well, I'm sure she'll get to do some cool stuff in one of the remaining episodes.

  7. Hmm, it looks like there is an edit button for comments on here, but if it is one, it is not working.

Anyway, I don't think I will be able to think of Applejack the same way after this as I'll likely be subconsciously thinking of her smug ass whenever I do. =/
